Photo: The UAE Celebrates #LabourDay Today
Wondering why your phone says 'Labour Day' this morning instead of du?
That's because the phone networks here in the UAE want to remind you of this international celebration, which comes every year on May 1. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation is organising a whole host of celebrations this week to honour the incredible contribution that labourers make to this country.
Educational, entertainment and sports activities will be offered to workers, while gifts will be distributed to 1,000 newcomers at Dubai International Airport. The ministry will also be releasing a report on workers' rights and recognising the officials in charge of the Workers’ Happiness programme.
Meanwhile, over in Abu Dhabi labourers will receive 8,000 prizes at their accommodation on Yas Island, as well as 1,000 du recharge cards and 2,000 free meals. Maher Hamad Al Obed, assistant undersecretary for Inspection Affairs at the ministry, said he hopes the celebration will promote tolerance and respect for workers.
International Labour Day celebrations run until Saturday May 5. For more information, head to mohre.gov.ae.
