UAE officials clarify updated personal medicine guidance

UAE officials have clarified the recent updated guidance on bringing personal medicines into the country.

In October, a Ministry of Health spokesman said that all tourists and residents would need approval for personal medicines – whether regular or controlled.
But now it has been clarified that the rule only applies to controlled substances, with a detailed list of affected medication available online here.
The updated website says: "The e-service of obtaining prior approval to carry personal medicine is available for narcotics, psychotropic and controlled medications only as per UAE definitions."
It adds: "The traveler is not obliged to obtain prior electronic approvals for other drugs."
For non-controlled medication, visitors and residents must carry a doctor's prescription as well as a medical report, and must not take more than three months' supply into the UAE.
However, if you are taking controlled medication, it's easy to get permission – all it takes is a simple online form, and it's completely free.
A doctor's prescription, passport or Emirates ID copy and some other verification details need to be submitted using the Ministry of Health website.
It will then by reviewed by officials and approved within one working day, with the medicines then checked on entry by an inspector.
Passengers can take one month of controlled or semi-controlled medicine into the country. Any medicine that does not meet the requirements will be seized at the airport.
