Controversial VIDEO: Emirati man locks up Indian football supporters in a cage
A controversial video showing an Emirati man locking several Indian supporters in a bird cage, before the match yesterday, has surfaced online.
And now the man in question has been detained by the authorities.
The statement from the Attorney General read:
"The video allegedly shows a man who locked up several men of Asian nationality in a bird cage. They were supposed to cheer for the UAE national team in their match against India in the AFC Asian Cup. Legal action was taken, with reports submitted to the prosecutor's office. A warrant was issued for the man who made the video, and he was detained and brought in for questioning. Not only is the act a criminal offence punishable by law in the UAE, it does not reflect the values of tolerance and respect. Discrimination is not acceptable, as we believe in equality of opportunity and meritocracy."
Watch:
After the UAE Attorney General's office released the statement, the owner of the video spoke out in his defense. He emphasised that the entire video was a "skit" and was done as a joke.
"These men are my workers, one of whom I've known for 22 years. I live with my men on this farm, we eat from the same plate. I did not beat them, nor did I truly 'lock' them up."
"This is the Year of Tolerance. Please understand my intentions," he concluded.
UAE did end up winning the match against India yesterday:
Yesterday's game saw host UAE trump India 2-0 in a nail-biting match, and solidified its spot at the top of Group A with 4 points.
In fact, the stadium was filled to its full capacity as almost 43,000 Emirati and Indian fans were gathered to see the spectacle.
